A Winnipeg man with ties to the India-based Bishnoi gang, which has been listed as terrorist entity in Canada, has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a violent attack on the Vancouver Island home of Punjabi musician AP Dhillon.
Abjeet Kingra, 26, was sentenced in a Victoria courtroom on September 26th after being found guilty of arson damaging property and recklessly discharging a firearm. The judge determined that Kingra was acting under the instructions of the Bishnoi gang to commit “targeted, criminal acts in Canada,” according to an RCMP statement released on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on September 2, 2024, in Colwood, B.C., where Kingra and a second suspect allegedly fired at least 14 gunshots into Dhillon’s home on Ravenwood Road and set two vehicles on fire. However, no one was injured in the incident.
Kingra was arrested in Ontario on October 30, 2024. He was handed a six-year term for the firearm conviction and a concurrent two-year term for the arson conviction. With credit for the 489 days he has already served in custody, Kingra is expected to spend an additional four and a half years in prison.
The sentencing closely follows the federal government’s designation of the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity earlier this week. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree stated that the gang generates terror through “murder, shootings and arson,” often targeting prominent members of specific communities. The new designation will grant Canadian agencies stronger tools to combat the group.
The RCMP confirmed that their work is not over, as they continue to search for the second suspect, Vikram Sharma, 24, who is wanted on an arrest warrant and is believed to have fled to India.
“We remain committed to locating Vikram Sharma and bringing him before the courts,” said West Shore RCMP Insp. Stephen Rose in a statement.
