U.S. authorities have charged a California man following a cross-border investigation into alleged death threats made against a B.C.-based extortion target linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Court documents state that Jasmeet Singh repeatedly threatened a victim who relocated to Canada after assisting Indian police in identifying and arresting two suspected gang associates in India. The investigation came to the attention of the FBI in Sacramento after the RCMP reported that Singh had issued death threats over WhatsApp on May 27, 2024.
According to the documents, the caller identified himself as “Lucky Hoshiarpur,” a name investigators later linked to Singh. During a series of calls that day, Singh allegedly threatened the victim with bodily harm and death for cooperating with Indian authorities. In one call, he activated video to show his face and told the victim he would be killed “today or tomorrow.”
FBI special agent Brian Toy wrote that the purpose of the calls was to intimidate the victim by making explicit threats. Singh allegedly demonstrated detailed knowledge of the victim’s daily life, including the make and colour of his vehicle, where he spends time, and even his coffee preferences, which investigators say was meant to show the threats were credible.
During the same call, Singh reportedly told the victim he would die in Canada and later sent a photo that appeared to show the victim’s vehicle parked outside his home. He also allegedly threatened the victim’s family in India.
The FBI questioned Singh on Aug. 29, 2024. He remains in ICE custody as of Nov. 26, 2025, when the court documents were filed.
In the affidavit, Toy stated there is probable cause that Singh violated U.S. law by transmitting threats to injure and kill the victim through audio and video calls on WhatsApp.
