The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) arrested a suspect yesterday afternoon after a 9-1-1 caller reported seeing a man board a bus with what appeared to be a rifle.

On July 23rd, at approximately 3:51 p.m., police received a call about a man getting onto a bus near Sixth Street and Carnarvon Street with what looked like a rifle wrapped in a garbage bag.

Officers quickly located the bus and, by approximately 4:01 p.m., safely took the suspect into custody in the 700 block of Sixth Street. Police utilized de-escalation techniques and clear communication to ensure compliance during the arrest.

Upon closer inspection, the firearm was determined to be a replica. The NWPD is urging the public to consider the inherent risks before bringing replica firearms into public spaces. Officers are trained to treat every firearm as real until it can be proven otherwise.

“We’d like to thank the person who called 9-1-1,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “If you ever see anything that causes you concern for the safety of others, we ask that you make the call. We’re here for you.”

Police are also reminding the public to maintain a safe distance when officers have their weapons drawn. This incident remains under active investigation.
