Police in New Westminster responded to a 9-1-1 call on February 10 reporting a man carrying what appeared to be a long gun and trying door handles at homes in the city’s West End.

As officers established a containment area, a man matching the suspect’s description exited a nearby residence and was arrested without incident. Police deployed a drone to check inside the home before entering, confirming the weapon was an airsoft rifle.

“Replica firearms can create significant fear in the community and lead to a substantial police response,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, noting that the drone helped officers assess the situation and maintain safety.

After speaking with the individual, police said they will not be recommending charges. Officers reminded the public that any firearm—real or replica—must be treated as genuine until proven otherwise to ensure public safety.
