A man has been arrested and charged in connection with two unprovoked assaults on strangers in downtown Vancouver on Sunday.

According to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), a 40-year-old man was walking near Granville and West Pender streets around 11:30 a.m. when he was allegedly pushed “several times” by an unknown man.

“Moments later, the same suspect allegedly approached a couple walking along Granville Street and violently threw one of them to the ground before fleeing on foot,” a VPD release stated.

Witnesses reportedly chased the suspect into a nearby lane and held him until officers arrived.

The BC Prosecution Service has since charged a 29-year-old man with two counts of assault and one count of assault by choking. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

The VPD confirmed that a 30-year-old woman, who was visiting from Germany, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. No further updates on other victims were provided.
