The Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver says its staff were left shaken after yet another violent incident at the downtown location.

According to Vice Chairman Fred Kwok, the incident occurred on Sunday, July 6, around closing time, when a man approached the centre on East Pender Street near Columbia Street and attempted to force his way inside. “He came to the door and tried to push into the building, but the staff had kept the latch locked,” Kwok explained.

The man then yanked on the locked door with such force that the glass shattered. Surveillance footage shows a man wearing a black shirt and pants pulling on the door both before and after the glass broke. Although no injuries were reported, Kwok said the event left staff shaken.

The centre has been repeatedly targeted by vandalism in recent years and was the site of a suspicious fire in 2023. Kwok voiced his frustration, saying staff often feel powerless during such incidents because assistance is slow to arrive. “When we call security or police, it takes time for them to get here. By that point, the individual is usually gone,” he said.
