A new Leger poll released by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) shows that 56% of British Columbians want the provincial government to reduce the size and cost of the bureaucracy.

“The poll shows that taxpayers know the provincial bureaucracy has become bloated and wasteful,” said Carson Binda, CTF B.C. Director adding “Premier David Eby must reduce the size and cost of the bureaucracy.”

Since 2021, the core bureaucracy has added more than 8,200 new employees, with its net cost increasing by 40% over the same period.

The poll asked British Columbians what should be done about the bureaucracy’s size and cost. The results show 56% want to reduce the number of employees and the cost, 19% want to maintain the current number of employees and cost, 4% want to increase the number of employees and cost and 21% didn’t know.

Among those with an opinion, 71% of British Columbians want to see the bureaucracy reduced in both size and cost.

“British Columbians can’t afford for Eby to keep a bloated bureaucracy,” Binda said. “Despite the big increase in bureaucracy, British Columbians aren’t receiving better services from the province.”

The poll also asked if the quality of services from the provincial government has improved or worsened since 2021. The results from those who responded with an opinion showed 49% said the quality of services is worse, 39% said the quality of services is the same and 12% said the quality of services is getting better.
