Ottawa- Liberal and Conservative Members of Parliament voted in favor of passing the government’s major projects legislation this evening.
Following the second of two separate votes, Prime Minister Mark Carney crossed the floor to shake hands with Opposition House Leader Andrew Scheer and Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman. The House Speaker had ruled that the legislation contained two distinct components with no clear unifying element, requiring two separate votes instead of one.
This decision allowed Bloc Québécois and NDP MPs to support the first portion of the bill — aimed at reducing internal trade barriers — while opposing the more contentious second part, which focuses on major infrastructure projects. The legislation grants the federal government broad authority to fast-track projects deemed in the national interest.
The bill will now proceed to the Senate, which is scheduled to sit until June 27.
