The Liberal government is launching a new federal procurement agency designed to overhaul and centralize how the military purchases its equipment.
The new Defence Investment Agency (DIA) is being rolled out to speed up the acquisition of equipment for the Canadian Armed Forces.
Stephen Fuhr, Secretary of State for Defence Procurement, who will oversee the new DIA, stated the agency will deliver equipment to the Canadian Armed Forces at a faster pace that will better meet their needs.
The Liberal government has appointed former Royal Bank of Canada executive Doug Guzman to manage the new agency, which will be housed within Public Services and Procurement Canada.
The launch fulfills a key promise made by Prime Minister Mark Carney during his election campaign to streamline the military purchasing system and cut down on lengthy delays.
The Liberals had initially committed to establishing a new defence procurement agency in 2019 but abandoned those plans as a priority when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
