The Law Society of British Columbia says it has learned that lawyers are being hit with extortion demands for “large sums of money.”
In a notice to members, the province’s legal regulator warned that some lawyers have received threats to their personal safety and urged anyone targeted to contact police.
Conservative MLA Steve Kooner, the Opposition’s attorney general critic, called the threats against lawyers a “disturbing escalation” of what he describes as the province’s ongoing “extortion crisis.”
Kooner says he is “deeply concerned” that lawyers are now being targeted, especially as business owners and families have already been facing a surge in extortion-related crime. He is calling on the federal government to designate extortion as a terrorism offence.
He argues that threatening those who uphold the justice system is effectively an attack on the system itself, underscoring what he calls an “urgent” need for a stronger response and for elevating extortion to a terrorism-level offence under the Criminal Code.
B.C. has established an Extortion Task Force to investigate dozens of extortion attempts and related shootings — many involving South Asian business owners — that have shaken multiple communities across the province.
