Surrey, BC – British Columbia’s Attorney General, Niki Sharma, announced on Monday that she has received the final report from the Commission of Inquiry into Community Events Safety in B.C. This crucial inquiry was launched in response to the tragic violence that marred a Lapu-Lapu Day celebration on Saturday, April 26, 2025, which resulted in 11 deaths and numerous injuries.

“On Saturday, April 26, 2025, British Columbia experienced one of the worst moments in our history, when a senseless act of violence turned a Lapu-Lapu Day celebration into a tragedy that left 11 people dead and countless more injured and traumatized,” Sharma stated.

Following the devastating incident, British Columbians raised urgent questions about bolstering public safety at community gatherings. Premier David Eby subsequently commissioned the public inquiry, tasking it with delivering recommendations by June 30, 2025.

The commission’s mandate was to investigate and report on methods to enhance security and safety at all types of community events. It was specifically charged with providing practical advice and recommendations for event organizers, local governments, and public safety officials.

“I am pleased to have received the report from the commissioner of inquiry into community events safety in B.C., Christopher E. Hinkson,” Sharma confirmed. The report is slated for presentation to the provincial cabinet in the coming days, in accordance with the Public Inquiry Act. After cabinet review, it will be filed with the clerk of the legislative assembly and made public.

Sharma extended her gratitude to Commissioner Hinkson and his team for their diligent work over the past six weeks. “Their efforts aim to enhance and protect our right to gather and celebrate safely and ensure that fear does not prevent communities from coming together,” she concluded.
