A landslide in rural northern Coquitlam brought down power lines and left more than 5,000 BC Hydro customers without electricity as storms continued to hit the Lower Mainland on Thursday. 8 people, 2 dogs, 1 cat had to be rescued
The utility said the rock or mudslide occurred early in the morning north of Pipeline Road. Crews have since restored power to most affected customers, though about 20 were still without service.
BC Hydro noted that unstable ground conditions are preventing crews from safely accessing the damaged area, but a geotechnical team has been dispatched to assist. Full restoration may not be completed until later in the evening or possibly the next morning.
Images from the site show heavy debris—including mud, rocks, and fallen trees—covering the area and impacting power lines.
Meanwhile, Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an orange rainfall warning for northeastern Metro Vancouver, including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, cautioning that ongoing rain on already saturated ground is increasing the risk of additional landslides. Up to 80 to 130 millimetres of rain is expected through Friday.
