Kendamil infant formula recalled in Canada over toxin risk

Infant formula sold at Costco warehouses across Canada is being recalled after testing found cereulide, a toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said the affected product is Kendamil brand infant formula. Cereulide is produced by certain strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus and can trigger gastrointestinal symptoms within 30 minutes of consumption, including stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Kendamil, a U.K.-based company that makes whole milk infant formula, has been subject to a broader international recall that began in December 2025, according to the European Food Safety Authority. Canada announced its recall on Feb. 22.

No illnesses have been reported in Canada. However, European authorities have received reports of diarrhea in infants who consumed the recalled formula. In one case, an infant tested positive for the toxin and experienced vomiting and diarrhea but later recovered.

Cereulide is highly heat-resistant, meaning warming the formula will not destroy the toxin. In young infants, exposure may lead to complications such as dehydration.

The CFIA advises consumers not to use, sell, or distribute the recalled product and to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase. The affected formula comes in 1,049-gram packages with a best-before date of May 1, 2027. Parents who believe their child may have become ill should contact a healthcare provider.
