Industry Minister Melanie Joly announced that the federal government is launching a dispute resolution process against Stellantis after the automaker decided to move planned vehicle production from its Brampton, Ontario plant to the United States.

Speaking to a parliamentary committee, Joly said the formal 30-day process is intended to recover Canadian taxpayer funds and encourage the company to return production to Brampton. She noted that the action is based on government contracts with Stellantis and will be initiated by the end of the business day.

Joly also mentioned meeting with Brampton autoworkers last week, emphasizing that the company must be held accountable for breaking its commitments.

Last month, Stellantis announced it would move planned Jeep Compass production from Brampton to Illinois, prompting the federal government to threaten legal action. The company’s president, Jeff Hines, testified last week that the decision to shift production was not taken lightly.
