The B.C. Conservatives are enduring a challenging summer as the party’s fundraising efforts have fallen behind the NDP. Leader John Rustad attributes the poor results to donor fatigue following both provincial and federal elections.

According to data released this week by Elections B.C., the Conservatives raised just over $350,000 between April 1 and June 30. This is less than half of the $700,589 raised by Premier David Eby’s NDP. In fact, Rustad’s party was closer to the B.C. Greens’ total of $200,000 than it was to the governing party’s figure.

This performance stands in stark contrast to the Conservatives’ first quarter, where they raised $723,000 compared to the NDP’s $802,000.

“Our fundraising needs to be picked up,” Rustad said.

He explained, “Part of it is that post-election we’ve seen historically… fundraising always drops off going into the summer, plus you had the federal election, and a lot of people we talked to on the fundraising side are tapped out.”

Rustad noted that he is seeing better fundraising totals over the past two months and hopes this will be reflected in the third quarter results for July through September, which will be released in October.
