U.S. Vice-President JD Vance posted a series of criticisms on Friday targeting Canada’s political leadership, public broadcaster, and immigration system, arguing that the country’s living standards are “stagnating” because of the large number of “foreign-born” residents.

On X, Vance claimed Canadian leaders have created “immigration insanity” by emphasizing diversity. He wrote that “no nation has leaned more into ‘diversity is our strength’” and described Canada’s approach as a “salad bowl” immigration model. His post included a chart from Halifax-based Ice Cap Asset Management comparing changes in living standards — measured by GDP per capita — in Canada, the U.K., and the U.S. since 2016. One of the firm’s analysts, Richard Dias, replied that he “agreed.”

Vance also rejected the idea that U.S. trade or economic policies are responsible for Canada’s current living standards.

The Liberal government recently lowered its 2026 target for temporary residents, reducing it by roughly 25 per cent from last year’s plan, which had projected more than 516,000 arrivals. Recent data shows the unemployment rate among new immigrants was 11.1 per cent last year, about double the rate among Canadian-born workers, and Statistics Canada reports they are more likely to work in jobs unrelated to their training.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab’s office did not respond to Vance’s comments but said the government is “restoring control” over the immigration system and returning it to “sustainable levels.”
