Rome-Flights at the Bergamo-Orio al Serio airport in northern Italy were temporarily suspended on Tuesday following a runway incident. According to local media reports, the disruption was reportedly caused by a person who ran onto the tarmac and was pulled into a plane’s engine.
The airport authority stated that all flights were halted from 10:20 a.m. to noon local time due to an issue on the taxiway. An investigation is currently underway.
Sources, reported that the individual ran onto the runway just as a Volotea Airbus A319 was taking off for Asturias, Spain, and was sucked into the engine. During the suspension, at least eight outgoing flights were canceled, while incoming flights were rerouted to other regional airports, including Bologna, Verona, and Milan Malpensa.
The aircraft involved was an Airbus A319 operated by budget airline Volotea, scheduled to fly from Bergamo to Asturias in northern Spain. The incident reportedly happened shortly after boarding was completed and the plane had begun taxiing away from the terminal.
According to ANSA, the individual is believed to have entered the runway with the intention of ending his life. The man, who was neither a passenger nor an airport staff member, bypassed security and ran toward the moving aircraft.
