A delegation of 30 Canadians, including six Members of Parliament (MPs), was denied entry into the occupied West Bank early Tuesday by Israeli authorities.
The group was on a sponsored trip organized by The Canadian Muslim Vote, a Canadian registered non-profit charity.
The six MPs in the delegation are Liberal MPs Fares Al Soud, Iqra Khalid, Aslam Rana, Gurbux Saini and Sameer Zuberi, and NDP MP Jenny Kwan.
NDP MP for Vancouver-East, Jenny Kwan, who was one of the six denied MPs, released a statement confirming the entire delegation was blocked from entering the occupied West Bank based on “public security, public safety or public order considerations.”
“I categorically reject the assertion that elected officials and civil society organizations engaging in humanitarian and fact-finding work pose any risk to public safety, security, or public order,” Kwan wrote.
A spokesperson for the National Council of Canadian Muslims stated that each delegate was asked to sign a form that identified them as a threat to public security, but they refused to comply.
The Parliamentarians and delegates had planned to meet with civil society groups, Palestinian refugees, and internally displaced persons, as well as officials from the Canadian government and the Palestinian Authority.
Kwan noted that the Canadian government had informed Israel of the planned travel in advance, and all arrangements and documentation were completed before the trip.
