An inmate who admitted to killing Robert Pickton in prison last year says he did it on behalf of Pickton’s victims.

Martin Charest confessed today to fatally attacking Pickton with a broken broom handle at the Port-Cartier federal penitentiary in May 2024.

He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder during a court appearance in Sept-Îles, Quebec, northeast of Quebec City.

Pickton was convicted in 2007 of six counts of second-degree murder, though he admitted to killing 49 women lured to his pig farm near Vancouver.

According to an agreed statement of facts read in court, Charest locked himself in a room with Pickton and attacked him twice while guards were unable to intervene.

Charest told the judge he killed Pickton because the serial killer kept boasting about his crimes and said he would commit more murders if ever released.
