Indian High Commission in Canada Issues Warning to Citizens .
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has issued an important advisory for Indians living in Canada, especially international students, warning them about scam emails and phone calls impersonating Canadian authorities.
The advisory states that several Indian nationals and people of Indian origin in Canada have reported receiving fraudulent messages related to their visa status, alleged immigration violations, fake job offers, or false promises of application fee refunds.
In some cases, scammers have falsely accused victims of being involved in criminal or fraudulent activities to pressure them into paying money or revealing personal information. International students appear to be the main targets of these scams.
The High Commission is urging members of the Indian community to remain alert and cautious, and to verify the legitimacy of any such communication directly with the appropriate authorities.
The Indian High Commission has stated that, in several cases, scammers have falsely claimed to be officials from the Indian High Commission in Toronto or Vancouver, or from the Consulate General of India in those cities. It has also been reported that some individuals have managed to manipulate caller ID to make it appear as though the calls are coming from official phone numbers listed on the websites of the Indian missions in Toronto or Vancouver.
As a result, Indian nationals are being advised to remain cautious and informed that the Indian High Commission, the Consulate General of India in Toronto, and the Consulate General of India in Vancouver are not associated with such fraudulent calls.
Suspicious phone calls should be reported to the relevant law enforcement authorities. If the call appears to originate from India, complaints can be filed at https://www.cybercrime.gov.in.
