The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has announced new rules for Overseas Citizens of India, also known as OCI cardholders. In a recent gazette notification, the Government of India stated that OCI cards and registration can be cancelled if an individual is facing criminal charges or convictions.

According to the notification shared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) registration can be cancelled if a person has been sentenced to two or more years in prison, or if a charge sheet has been filed against them for an offense punishable with seven or more years of imprisonment.

OCI cards are typically sought by individuals of Indian origin who have obtained citizenship in other countries to facilitate travel to and from India. OCI cardholders can travel to India as many times as they wish and stay for extended periods. They are also exempt from registering with local police authorities for any length of stay.

Without an OCI card, these applicants would be required to obtain a visa to travel to India.
