India imposes a 30% import duty on yellow peas

India has announced a 30% import duty on yellow peas, effective November 1, according to a government notification issued late Wednesday.

Shipments with a bill of lading dated on or before October 31, 2025, will be exempt from the new duty. The government had previously allowed duty-free imports of yellow peas until March 31, 2026, but domestic farmers urged action to limit the flow of cheap imports that were driving down local prices.

India, the world’s largest importer of yellow peas, sources most of its supplies from Canada and Russia. Saskatchewan will play a “very important role” as Canadian yellow pea producers face tariffs in both of their major export markets, according to the province’s minister of trade and export development.

India is set to impose a new 30 per cent tariff on all imported yellow peas starting November 1, The Canadian Press reported Thursday.

This follows China’s decision in March to introduce a 100 per cent tariff on Canadian yellow peas, along with several other products.

Saskatchewan Trade Minister Warren Kaeding said the province’s trade office “is currently the highest-level Canadian office operating in India.”

“I would say Saskatchewan will play a very important role in working through this issue with the Indian government,” Kaeding said.

According to Saskatchewan’s agriculture minister, India and China together account for 71 per cent of the province’s pea exports. In 2024 alone, Saskatchewan exported $480 million worth of peas to India.
