Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has announced that India has agreed to allow a full cohort of Canadian diplomats to return, a year after New Delhi compelled Ottawa to withdraw most of its envoys.
Anand met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Indian officials on Monday. The two nations signed a statement outlining areas for cooperation, such as trade and artificial intelligence, though Anand stressed that this work will proceed only gradually.
Speaking from Mumbai, Anand said that re-establishing Canada’s full number of diplomats was a necessary step Ottawa required before considering a trade mission or reviving talks on a potential trade deal. Anand affirmed that Canada will always defend the security of Canadians, even as Canadian officials have repeatedly flagged New Delhi as a major source of transnational political repression.
Canadian officials insist they are working gradually to rebuild trust with India, a process that began when Prime Minister Mark Carney hosted Modi at the G7 summit in Alberta in June.
