The Vancouver Police Department today issued a safety plan in connection with the Honda Celebration of Light event. Under this plan, several roads will be closed, vehicle barriers will be placed, and there will be a strong police presence for the duration of the event.
This annual fireworks event is one of the most popular events in Vancouver, and hundreds of thousands of people visit the downtown area to enjoy the fireworks.
VPD’s Sgt. Steve Addison stated that, after the Lapu-Lapu festival tragedy, special focus has been placed on security. 11 people had died on April 26 during Lapu Lapu festival when a drivers rammed his SUV into the crowd. Addison said that the department is urging visitors to leave their vehicles at home.
Latest Safety Plan
Increased Security After Lapu-Lapu Tragedy: The Vancouver Police Department and event organizers have taken extra security measures after the vehicle attack during the Lapu-Lapu Festival in April 2025.
Vehicle Barriers: Steel and concrete barriers will be placed on key roads like Denman Street and Beach Avenue to block unauthorized vehicles and protect pedestrians. These Archer barriers are 700-pound steel barriers.
Road Closures: Specific streets in the downtown area will be closed during the event to manage crowd flow and vehicle traffic.
Police Deployment: A significant number of police officers will be stationed at important locations to monitor the crowd and control vehicle access. Only residents and approved vehicles will be allowed in certain areas.
