Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister, has been granted bail by the Pakistan Supreme Court in eight cases related to the riots of May 9, 2023.
The decision was made during the hearing of several cases filed against Khan following widespread demonstrations and assaults on military and government facilities last year.
The bail petitions were heard by a three-judge panel that included Justices Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, and Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. According to Dawn, the bench was reorganized to consider the bail requests, with Chief Justice Afridi leading the proceedings.
Khan’s PTI celebrated the ruling, using the hashtag “Victory For Imran Khan” in a post on X. Khan’s international spokesman, Zulfiqar Bukhari, stated that the party leader now needs bail in only one more case.
However, Khan still faces several additional trials related to the May 9 unrest. In November 2024, he had applied for bail in other cases, including the attack on the Lahore Corps Commander’s house, at a Lahore anti-terrorism court. That petition was rejected.
