The man accused of a triple stabbing at a Vancouver Chinatown festival in 2023 appeared in court again Thursday, as a Crown prosecutor questioned his thought process leading up to the attack.
Blair Donnelly has admitted to carrying out the stabbings. At B.C. Supreme Court, Crown prosecutor Mark Myhre suggested that Donnelly acted on his own decision.
However, Donnelly repeatedly maintained that he was guided by God, telling the court, “I was just on automatic. It just seemed like everything I did, I was being led to do it.”
The Crown challenged his claim that he felt divinely instructed, questioning him on each action that day and implying that every decision, from buying a chisel to the stabbings themselves, was his own. Donnelly often paused for long periods before agreeing.
Donnelly said he believed God wanted him to harm people that day and that the chisel allowed him to do so without killing anyone. When the prosecutor suggested he wasn’t guided by the Holy Spirit, Donnelly responded after a long pause, “Perhaps not. Perhaps so. I don’t know.”
He now says he misinterpreted signs and feels that God did not intend for him to carry out the attack.
Donnelly has a prior history of violence, including the 2006 stabbing death of his 16-year-old daughter, for which he was found not criminally responsible.
Next week, a doctor will testify regarding Donnelly’s latest psychological assessment, a key factor in determining whether he will be held criminally responsible in this case.
