Authorities in British Columbia have closed Highway 93 near the village of Radium, B.C. due to a “high avalanche hazard.”

According to DriveBC, the closure takes effect at 2 p.m. and will remain in place until at least noon on Saturday. It impacts 90 kilometres of the highway, stretching from the western boundary of Kootenay National Park to where Highway 93 meets Highway 95, the route to Golden, B.C..

Parks Canada reports avalanche activity across multiple mountain regions, from Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park to Jasper National Park. Officials have triggered controlled avalanches in these areas to reduce the risk. One of the controlled slides along the Trans-Canada Highway between Revelstoke and Golden was classified as a size-four avalanche—capable of destroying a rail car, a large truck, multiple buildings, or clearing a 10-acre swath of forest.

Jasper National Park staff reported that a winter storm this week brought up to 92 centimetres of snow and rain, creating a high avalanche risk along the Icefields Parkway from Athabasca Falls to Saskatchewan Crossing. As a result, Parks Canada has closed the highway from noon Wednesday until at least Friday.
