Environment Canada has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the low-lying areas of southwestern British Columbia, even as large-scale cleanup efforts continue in regions previously affected by flooding. The agency is forecasting up to 70 millimetres of rain for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley by Wednesday morning.
Cleanup operations began in the Fraser Valley on Monday after floodwaters originating from the Nooksack River in Washington state started to recede. However, the risk of flooding remains high for several B.C. rivers and has now extended as far as the North Shore of Metro Vancouver.
B.C. Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene stated that the heavy rain across the province’s South Coast has “increased the risk of flooding and landslides” on the North Shore. Greene advised residents to stay away from riverbanks and waterways, as water levels are elevated and the banks may be unstable.
As of Tuesday morning, BC Hydro reported that strong winds associated with the latest storm system had caused power outages for approximately 10,400 customers across the province.
