A heat warning was issued Monday for the Lower Mainland, with little relief expected until midweek.
Environment Canada reports that Vancouver, Burnaby, and New Westminster are now included in the warning, joining other parts of the province. Temperatures are forecast to rise above 30 degrees Celsius across much of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Sunday was already hot, but Monday and Tuesday are expected to feel four to five degrees warmer.
This marks the peak of the heatwave: the hottest part of a three-day stretch lasting through Tuesday, driven by a large dome of high pressure, clear skies, and soaring temperatures reaching 34 to 36 degrees. With humidity factored in, it could feel as warm as 39 degrees in some areas of the Lower Mainland. Monday could be the hottest day of the summer so far, but the intense heat won’t last long.
After one more hot day on Tuesday, temperatures are expected to return closer to seasonal averages by Wednesday and remain mild through the weekend.
Environment Canada notes that strong northwesterly winds over the Strait of Georgia will bring some cooler air near the water, but advises the public to be alert for signs of heat stroke.
Symptoms to watch for include high body temperature, confusion, dizziness or fainting, and very hot or red skin. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.
Seniors and people with diabetes, heart, or respiratory conditions are especially at risk. Anyone showing signs of heat illness should be moved to a cooler place immediately, and everyone is encouraged to stay well-hydrated.
The agency also reminds people never to leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles.
