Health Canada has approved the first drug specifically designed to treat postpartum depression (PPD).
The drug, Zuranolone, is sold under the brand name Zurzuvae. It is administered as a pill taken once a day for 14 days and is notable for its speed, potentially beginning to relieve depressive symptoms in as little as three days.
According to Health Canada, approximately one in five women experience severe depression or anxiety during and after pregnancy.
Psychiatrist Dr. Crystal Clark noted that standard antidepressants are frequently used to treat PPD, but Zurzuvae is expected to offer a faster-acting alternative.
