A Halloween costume sparked a tense police response in New Westminster, B.C., this week and prompted a warning about carrying toy guns in public.
The incident occurred early Thursday afternoon near Moody Park, when police received a report of someone with a handgun. Officers “flooded the area,” according to the New Westminster Police Department, but soon discovered the person was a youth carrying a toy gun as part of his Halloween costume.
“To protect the youth’s privacy, we won’t share details about his costume or age,” NWPD spokesperson Hailey Finnigan told in an email.
Finnigan emphasized that toy guns can look nearly identical to real ones, especially from a distance or in low light, and can easily cause alarm.
With Halloween approaching, police are urging people to keep costume props that resemble real weapons out of sight while in public.
“Officers must treat all firearms as real until they can confirm they’re replicas,” the NWPD said.
