Canadians are among those injured after two trains collided head-on in Peru on Tuesday, Global Affairs Canada has confirmed.
The crash occurred on the rail line to Machu Picchu, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. One train driver was killed and about 40 people were injured in the collision between Inca Rail S.A. and PeruRail S.A. trains, which mainly transport tourists to the historic site. A health official told Reuters that roughly 20 of the injured were in relatively serious condition.
Canadian officials are providing consular support and are in contact with local authorities. Due to privacy concerns, no additional details can be released.
Police have launched an investigation into the crash.
Images shared on social media showed the two wrecked locomotives facing each other on the tracks, with shattered glass and injured passengers receiving treatment alongside the rail line.
Machu Picchu, high in the Peruvian Andes, is Peru’s most visited tourist destination, attracting more than one million visitors each year.
