G7 Summit Kicks off With Number of Agendas Including Global Trade & Energy Security

Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday welcomed the G7 Leaders at Kananaskis, Alta. Among those greeted were German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, U.S. President Donald Trump, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Each leader posed for photos and exchanged handshakes with Prime Minister Carney and his wife, Diana Fox Carney. Also welcomed were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.


Following the greetings, Carney and the G7 leaders convened in the Opal Room for the summit’s first working session. Opening remarks were delivered in both English and French, with Carney acknowledging Alberta as his home province and recognizing the summit’s location on Treaty 7 territory. He reflected on the G7’s historical role and emphasized the challenges of a deeply divided global landscape.

Over the next two days, leaders will engage in critical discussions on issues including global trade, energy security, the Israel-Iran crisis, the Russia-Ukraine war, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, human smuggling, and transnational repression.

The summit aims to foster collaboration and consensus at a time of mounting global uncertainty. However, sources say the leaders are opting for short, action-oriented statements.

Before officially welcoming the leaders, Canadian Prime Minister and US President met to discuss trade and tariffs.

Talking about the meeting, Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs of Canada and Kirsten Hillman, Ambassador of Canada to the United States mentioned that Trade talks are positive among both countries and are escalating.

Minister LeBlanc mentioned that both Leaders also discussed a number of international issues.

The G7 Summit, running from June 15 to 17, is underway at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, a luxury resort nestled in the Rockies about an hour from Calgary, Alberta.

The G7 includes Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the European Union.
