The interior and security ministers from Canada and the other Group of Seven (G7) nations have pledged to work collaboratively to aggressively combat international organized crime.
Concluding a two-day meeting in Ottawa, G7 ministers on Sunday expressed their commitment to crippling the ability of global crime groups to profit from their heinous activities.
In a joint statement, the ministers said that international criminal organizations are “ruthless in their pursuit of profit, power, and influence” through corruption, violence, and other illicit means. The statement emphasized that “fighting them requires both a shared global understanding and a commitment to cooperation.”
The statement also noted that G7 countries recognize the need for “innovative approaches” to address organized crime threats, including the use of measures utilized in fields such as counter-terrorism and cyber security, where appropriate.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree stated that the activities of international organized crime are converging with terrorism, cyberattacks, and the exploitation of migrants.
“It is all coalescing as a centralized set of challenges that law enforcement agencies have not dealt with before,” he told media following the meetings.
He added, “So our hope is to do more work across the different domains to ensure that we are looking at these situations in a holistic way and addressing all the links that connect them.”
The G7, which is an informal group of major economies, includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the European Union.
