Health Canada is recalling a line of dining furniture sold at The Brick due to unsafe levels of lead.

The recalled furniture, branded as Lars, includes a counter-height wood-top table and chairs with black coatings on the legs and metal base. These items were sold individually or as part of five- or seven-piece sets.

According to the Government of Canada’s recall notice, the black coating contains lead levels exceeding the legal limits in Canada. Exposure to lead can cause serious health problems, particularly in children, affecting the liver, kidneys, heart, and immune system.

Ingesting lead can result in anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, severe brain injury, convulsions, coma, and, in extreme cases, death. Health Canada notes that lead can accumulate in the body over time, even from very small exposures.

Although no incidents or injuries have been reported in Canada as of August 15, Health Canada urges consumers to immediately stop using the recalled furniture and to contact The Brick for further instructions.
