Ontario Premier Doug Ford is again considering legislation that would require companies to display a flag showing a product’s country of origin, saying some businesses are misleading consumers.
Speaking in Pickering on Thursday, Ford criticized “sneaky companies” for passing off foreign-made goods as Canadian, citing Campbell’s soups, which he says display a Canadian flag despite being made in New Jersey. Campbell’s responded that its “Designed in Canada” label—added in 2018 after closing its Toronto plant—was meant to highlight Canadian recipes and preferences, and that the branding began being phased out in 2024.
Ford has long urged Ontarians to buy Canadian-made products and wants retailers to help customers identify them. His comments come amid a trade dispute with the U.S. and a day after Ontario announced a $1-billion emergency loan program for businesses affected by U.S. tariffs. He pledged to keep working to bring more manufacturing back to the province.
