The Victoria Police Department welcomed its first female chief constable on Thursday, as veteran officer Fiona Wilson was officially sworn into the role.

During a formal ceremony at Government House in Victoria, Wilson took command from the outgoing chief, Del Manak, who had led the department for nearly 10 years.

Before becoming Victoria’s top police officer, Wilson served as interim chief at the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). She spent more than two and a half decades with the VPD, starting with roles that included patrolling the Downtown Eastside and working as an investigator in the Sex Crimes Unit. She later moved into various leadership positions, earning a promotion to deputy chief in 2021.

Wilson stated that while she is new to Victoria, she feels that certain parts of the city are a “microcosm” of Vancouver. She plans to apply the same policing principles she used on the mainland to address the city’s issues.

“I have had almost 27 years of experience in Vancouver, and during that time I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on working to address some of the upstream causes of crime and disorder,” Wilson said.
