On October 20th, around 4:00 p.m., a New Westminster Police Department officer was conducting proactive patrols when a group of men was spotted on the second level of the Front Street parkade. One of the individuals appeared to be holding a handgun.
Officers quickly responded and safely arrested four people, leading to a large police presence in and around the parkade. Upon inspection, the firearm was determined to be a replica. Investigators later learned that the group had been filming a music video. The incident remains under investigation, and charges are being considered.
“Filming a music video with a replica firearm without following proper film industry safety protocols is extremely reckless,” said Communications Officer Hailey Finnigan. “There was absolutely no signage indicating this was a film set.”
The New Westminster Police Department is reminding the public of the serious risks associated with imitation firearms. Officers treat all firearm-related calls as legitimate threats until proven otherwise. For the safety of the community, the NWPD strongly discourages the purchase and use of replica weapons.
