The federal union representing workers at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has launched the second phase of its online campaign to protest staffing cuts.

The “Canada on Hold” campaign, which began last month focusing on CRA call centers, has now been expanded to highlight staffing reductions across the entire agency.

Marc Brière, the national president of the Union of Taxation Employees, stated that the CRA has cut almost 10,000 jobs since May 2024. The campaign aims to bring attention to the impact these cuts are having on services for taxpayers and businesses.

Brière announced that the union plans to hold a rally in front of the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, calling on the government to reinvest in the CRA.

After the first phase of the campaign, which criticized the loss of approximately 3,300 call center jobs, the Canada Revenue Agency offered contract extensions to around 850 call center employees.

Earlier this month, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne set a 100-day deadline for the CRA to fix call center delays, even as the government plans broader spending cuts across the public service.
