The federal government has revealed a comprehensive new plan to strengthen Canada’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure as part of its updated automotive strategy. The initiative aims to significantly increase the number of charging stations available to drivers across the country, addressing one of the primary hurdles to EV adoption.

Under this plan, Ottawa intends to spend over $84 million to add 8,000 new charging ports to Canada’s existing network of 30,000 chargers. This funding is part of a much larger commitment announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney last week, which earmarks a total of $1.5 billion for EV infrastructure development.

To further encourage Canadians to make the switch to cleaner transportation, the government is also relaunching its popular incentive program. The strategy includes a rebate of up to $5,000 toward the purchase of eligible fully electric cars and a rebate of up to $2,500 for eligible plug-in hybrid models.

Note that these rebate amounts are scheduled to gradually decrease every year until the year 2030.

Beyond consumer incentives, the government is committing $5.7 million to assist companies in transitioning their fleets to more fuel-efficient options. These measures are designed to make Canada’s automobile sector more environmentally friendly while ensuring the country remains competitive in the shifting global market.
