Canada government is investing $2.5 million to support Metro Vancouver’s Waste-to-Energy District energy project, an initiative designed to provide clean heating and hot water to homes across the region.
Wade Grant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced the funding today, highlighting the project’s role in cutting pollution and building resilient communities. The investment will help the Burnaby facility capture steam from its waste management process to heat up to 50,000 homes, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70,000 tonnes per year.
“Supporting the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District… demonstrates how the fight against climate change goes hand-in-hand with building resilient communities, cutting energy costs and growing our economy,” said Grant.
Federal officials said the project aligns with Canada’s efforts to promote green innovation and clean energy, while also helping residents lower their heating costs. The announcement was attended by several dignitaries, including Ministers Gregor Robertson and Julie Dabrusin, as well as local Metro Vancouver officials Mike Hurley and Sarah Kirby-Yung.
