The minority Liberal government successfully passed the second confidence vote on its federal budget on Friday afternoon, securing a key victory in the House of Commons.

The vote centered on a motion brought forward by the Bloc Québécois calling for the rejection of the budget. The Bloc amendment was overwhelmingly defeated with 307 votes against it, compared to only 30 votes in favour. Crucially, the Conservative party voted against the Bloc’s motion, ensuring the budget survived this test.

This victory follows the government’s success in defeating the first of three confidence tests, which occurred yesterday. In that instance, Members of Parliament (MPs) voted down a Conservative sub-amendment that sought to reject the budget on the basis that the government had not presented an affordable budget.

The Liberal government has now survived two major challenges to its fiscal plan. If the government had lost either of these votes, or if it loses the upcoming main vote on the budget itself, it would lose the confidence of the House, potentially triggering an early general election.
