The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is urging anyone who used a QR code to pay for parking on Saturday to contact their credit card company immediately after fraudulent QR code stickers were found in municipal parking lots.
On December 27, bylaw staff discovered fake QR code stickers, designed to mimic PayByPhone, on parking terminals and signs in Whistler Day Lots 1–5, on Main Street, and in the private Marketplace parking lot off Lorimer Road, according to a municipal statement issued Monday.
“The QR codes directed users to a fake website intended to collect payments, which likely went to the perpetrators,” the statement said. “Parking customers who scanned these QR codes should contact their credit card company immediately to report the fraud, cancel their card, and monitor for further suspicious activity.”
The stickers were removed by Sunday, and no victims have been identified so far. The fraudulent website has also been taken down.
The municipality stressed that it does not use QR codes for pay parking. Parking in Whistler can be paid at terminals using card or coins, through the PayByPhone website or app, or by calling 1-866-234-7275.
“We thank our bylaw services department for their swift action in discovering the QR codes and reporting the incident to the RCMP. Their prompt response has helped protect residents and visitors from this type of parking payment fraud,” the RMOW said.
“The RMOW’s parking system is secure and continuously monitored to prevent fraud and safeguard personal information. Parking payment fraud is a recognized form of theft that has affected other municipal systems in B.C.”
Anyone who mistakenly received a parking ticket should file a dispute via the RMOW website and can email concerns about the QR codes to privacy@whistler.ca
