The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has extended contracts for about 850 call centre employees, following growing concerns from their union over staffing shortages.

CRA spokesperson Etienne Biram said the affected workers, whose contracts were set to end in September, were notified of the decision last week.

The federal union representing CRA employees recently launched an online campaign criticizing staffing reductions.

Marc Brière, national president of the Union of Taxation Employees, said the loss of roughly 3,300 call centre workers over the past year has led to long wait times and dropped calls.

He added that the campaign’s main objective is to pressure the government to halt cuts, protect call centre jobs, and rehire staff, stressing that current levels are “too low” and services have been “seriously impacted.”

Biram noted that the CRA’s budget has faced constraints in recent years, forcing the agency to reassess the size of its workforce.
