A 21-year-old Avtar Singh, who was charged in connection with an extortion-linked shooting at a mansion in South Surrey, will stay in custody till January 21.
Avtar’s scheduled bail hearing was adjourned by the judge, requiring him to remain detained until the next court date on January 21 as the intensive investigation into organized crime continues.
The BC Extortion Task Force arrested Avtar Singh on December 5 and formally laid a charge of unlawful discharge of a firearm against him.
Singh appeared in court via video link for his bail hearing on Friday, but the judge adjourned the matter to January 21. This means the accused will remain incarcerated until the next scheduled court appearance.
The charges against Singh are related to an incident on November 12, during which a house in the 17000 block of 32 Avenue was targeted by gunfire. This property was hit by bullets twice within one week. The first shooting, which took place on November 8, resulted in injury to a worker who was inside the home at the time.
During a previous hearing, the court noted an unusual exchange where Avtar Singh told the judge he wished to return to India and inquired about the process. The judge responded that he should direct such questions to his legal counsel and not address the court directly on that matter.
The RCMP confirmed that while one suspect has now been charged in the case, the comprehensive investigation is far from over and remains active.
The incident highlights a growing wave of organized crime in the region. According to the Surrey Police Service, 106 extortion-related cases have been recorded in the city this year, including 44 separate shooting incidents. Furthermore, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is currently investigating 96 foreign nationals who may be inadmissible to Canada due to their alleged involvement in extortion schemes, and five individuals have already been deported.
