On Sunday June 15, many concerned South Asian business owners and residents in Surrey attended a public safety forum held at a banquet hall previously targeted in a shooting. The event, organized amid a rise in extortion threats, featured personal testimony from businessman Satish Kumar, who said he received death threats and demands for $2 million, with businesses linked to him being shot at. Kumar showed the images of the messages he said he had received from the alleged extortionists. Another business belonging to Kumar was shot at last Friday .
Prominent figures, including B.C. Minister of Public Safety Garry Begg, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, MPs, MLAs, and police officials, addressed the gathering. Begg acknowledged the fear gripping the community and stressed the complexity and national scope of organized crime. He emphasized the importance of reporting threats and outlined provincial and federal efforts, including $100 million annually for anti-crime initiatives and a national RCMP coordination team.
Mayor Locke highlighted that this was the fourth meeting on extortion, lamented the underreporting of incidents, and expressed dissatisfaction with the current level of policing support at all levels, urging for better protection of Surrey residents.
