NORTH VANCOUVER, BC – RCMP are investigating after the constituency office of longtime B.C. cabinet minister Bowinn Ma was damaged early Friday morning by an “explosive device”.
Mounties in North Vancouver confirmed that a door frame at the office of B.C.’s infrastructure minister was hit when the device detonated around 4:15 a.m. PT. Investigators are actively working to determine if the incident was politically motivated, looking into “all possible avenues.”
“Those are the questions that are hopefully going to be answered as our investigation unfolds,” RCMP Cpl. Mansoor Sahak stated at a midday news conference. “It’s a serious incident, and we want to make sure we investigate thoroughly and find the people who are behind this.”
Earlier on Friday, Ma released a statement confirming no one was hurt in what she described as a “frightening” security incident at her office. She subsequently cancelled all her meetings and appointments for the day.
The ground-floor office space on Esplanade Avenue, located just a few blocks from the bustling waterfront Shipyards area, has been cordoned off with police tape throughout the morning.
RCMP revealed that officers responded to two separate calls in the area overnight. The first was for a “loud bang” in the 100-block West First Avenue at 2:45 a.m., followed by a second call for a “loud explosion” at Ma’s office on Esplanade Avenue at 4:15 a.m. The two locations are approximately one block apart. Cpl. Sahak noted that nothing suspicious was found during the initial call, but the damage to Ma’s office door frame was discovered during the second response. Investigators are now working to determine if the two incidents are connected.
In statement on social media, B.C. Premier David Eby described Ma as “an incredible community leader,” and said his thoughts are with her and her staff.
