People living in the Tri-Cities region now have better access to court services with the opening of a fully equipped Supreme Court registry at the Port Coquitlam courthouse.

Attorney General Niki Sharma stated, “The Tri-Cities is one of the fastest-growing regions in B.C. and is experiencing an increased demand for court resources and services.” This new registry counter means people can access timely justice services right in their own community without having to travel to Vancouver or New Westminster. “It’s an important step in making the justice system more accessible for everyone,” she added.

With this expansion, the Port Coquitlam registry will offer full services for the first time, having provided limited filing services to support local Supreme Court hearings since 2021. Residents can now use the new registry counter for in-person filing and registry services for Supreme Court civil and family matters, which were previously only available in New Westminster or other regional courthouses.

Plans also include converting existing courthouse space into two more Supreme Court courtrooms, one of which will be a secure jury trial courtroom. Once completed, the Port Coquitlam courthouse will have a total of four Supreme Court courtrooms.
