Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Hardeep Grewal has publicly shared a distressing account of a racist attack he and his family endured while visiting downtown Muskoka, highlighting the “exhausting and painful” reality of fighting hate.

The Brampton East MPP took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to describe the incident, which occurred while he was sharing ice cream with his family. Grewal reported that two strangers separately hurled hate speech at them.

“One yelled, ‘Hey turban head, go home,’ before speeding off. Another, walking by, said, ‘You all should die,'” Grewal wrote in his powerful post.

The Progressive Conservative politician admitted that while the experience isn’t new, he felt compelled to speak out this time. “It is not the first time this has happened, but today I feel compelled to speak out about how exhausting and painful it is,” he stated.

Grewal emphasized his commitment to Canada, writing, “Ontario is our home. It belongs to all of us.” He concluded his message with encouragement for his community: “To my Sikh brothers and sisters, stay vigilant, stay proud, and stay strong. Hate never wins. Good will always triumph.”

Hardeep Grewal is the MPP for the riding of Brampton East, having first been elected in 2022.

Within the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, his current primary role is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation. He also serves as a Member of the Standing Committee on Heritage, Infrastructure and Cultural Policy.
