A quiet residential neighborhood turned into a high-intensity police scene overnight as specialized units swarmed a home following reports of gunfire. The Abbotsford Police Department successfully resolved a tense, hours-long standoff in the 33500 block of Cannon Avenue, resulting in nine individuals being taken into custody after they initially refused to vacate a residence known to law enforcement.
The incident began at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Monday, when patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, police identified a specific home believed to be central to the investigation. The situation escalated rapidly when several occupants became uncooperative, barricading themselves inside the structure. Given the confirmed presence of firearms, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) was deployed to manage the high-risk evacuation.
Throughout the late evening, residents near Bevan Avenue and Cannon Avenue reported hearing a series of loud explosions. Police later clarified that these “bangs” were tactical distraction devices utilized by the ERT to safely gain entry and maintain control of the scene. By shortly after midnight, the operation concluded with nine people removed from the home and detained for questioning.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were located during the sweep of the residence. While the nine individuals remain in transit or under detention, police noted that no formal arrests have been made as the investigation is in its infancy. The property remains under police guard this morning as investigators await a search warrant to meticulously process the interior for evidence.
In an effort to curb local anxiety, Abbotsford Police emphasized that this specific shooting and barricade event is not linked to the recent surge in extortion-related violence that has plagued the Lower Mainland. Investigators are currently canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage.
